Tessenderloh, Belgium, October 18, 2024 - Melexis, a global microelectronics engineering company, announces the launch of the MLX90416, a 24V/60W sensorless single-coil BLDC driver chip, which is designed for motors, fans, and pumps applications in the consumer electronics and industrial sectors.

Currently, numerous consumer electronics devices and industrial applications, such as electric fans, air purifiers, vacuum cleaners, water pumps, and ventilation facilities, commonly utilize either a combination of three-phase BLDC motors and driver chips or AC induction motors. However, both solutions have obvious limitations: three-phase BLDC motors are costly and complex; AC induction motors are energy inefficient and lack advanced features.

The MLX90416 is uniquely positioned to address these pain points, providing an efficient and economically viable solution that helps simplify the motor design and manufacturing process. Based on Melexis' “No-Hall” technology, the MLX90416 eliminates the need for feedback sensors and utilizes advanced integrated drive and feedback algorithms (BEMF) to achieve quiet, vibration-free operation comparable to three-phase drive chips. This technological innovation enables designers to flexibly place the BLDC driver chip outside the fan body, independent of magnet position. This shift allows for greater design flexibility - the same PCB can easily be configured with fans of different diameters without the need for redesign. In this way, the MLX90416 not only significantly reduces the complexity of the manufacturing process, but also significantly reduces the design effort and bill of materials (BoM) costs.

The MLX90416 is highly integrated, capable of driving a 24V fan with a maximum operating power of 60 W. The chip's plug-and-play, code-free convenience allows users to easily configure it through an intuitive GUI, enabling rapid deployment and adaptation in a variety of application scenarios. In addition, the MLX90416 supports forward and reverse operation and has an advanced 8-point configurable speed curve, a feature that makes it easy to accurately adjust fan performance, effectively solve resonance and vibration problems, and break through the limitations of fixed-curve solutions.

As a fully integrated solution, the MLX90416 demonstrates higher reliability than discrete sensorless solutions, while significantly reducing the design burden and packaging considerations. The chip not only supports PWM and FM control, but is also compatible with the I2C protocol, demonstrating its versatility. The MLX90416 has a wide range of applications, including white goods and consumer electronics such as fans, air fryers, ovens and vacuum cleaners, as well as industrial systems such as cooling fans and water pumps. Regardless of the application scenario, the MLX90416 helps to reduce product costs, extend service life and minimize component consumption, contributing to product sustainability.

“Melexis has more than three decades of expertise in single-coil product development, and we have been at the forefront of the industry since the successful launch of our first product in 1993,” said Hyun-Hong Ou, regional marketing manager at Melexis, ”The MLX90416 not only helps us to reduce costs by easing the development burden and reducing costs, creating substantial value for our customers, but also significantly enhancing the intelligence and digitization of their designs, ultimately benefiting a wide range of end users.”

The MLX90416 is available in a miniature DFN-10 package and is available for development ordering now. For more information, visit https://www.emsfpga.com/s?wd=MLX90416 Or contact us directly at https://www.emsfpga.com/contact.
